Sydney grew up in a small town in Laredo, Nasan's westernmost kingdom. The son of reformed bandits, Sydney dreams of following in his mother's footsteps as a defender of the people, despite his complete lack of fighting ability and magic that barely functions as more than a nightlight.
When one of his parents' running buddies from their bandit days shows up in need of a spy to go undercover at the Petrichor Martial Academy, Sydney jumps at the chance to prove he's got more to offer the world than working on a ranch.
Lanei is an aspiring knight running from a life she never wanted. Growing up in Maldova, a prosperous kingdom dedicated to technology and scientific innovation, she has spent her life watching knights turn their backs on anyone who isn’t human. She’s also witnessed firsthand just how dangerous magic and unchecked power can be. When the opportunity to attend Petrichor presents itself, Lanei doesn't hesitate to jump headfirst into a world where her actions speak louder than anyone else's words.

Music drives me while I write. My writing playlist for Into the Black has close to 900 songs, but I've curated that down to a 22 song ultimate playlist for the book.
I've tried to set it up in a way that it follows the story like a soundtrack, starting with the opening credits (Butch Walker's "Into the Black", which was my inspiration for the title) and the character introduction songs ("Southern Comfort Zone" for Sydney and "America's Sweetheart" for Lanei) all the way through to the closing credits (P!nk's "All I Know So Far.")
I hope you'll enjoy listening to this playlist as you explore the world of Into the Black!
